SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public or private edition

We help you choose between the public and private cloud editions of SAP S/4HANA, then implement it. That covers architecture, fit-to-standard design, clean core, extensions on SAP BTP, integration and business continuity.

Moving SAP to the cloud

More SAP customers now run S/4HANA in the cloud rather than in their own data center. SAP offers two editions, and the right one depends on how standard your processes are, how much custom code you have and how much control you need.

We help small and mid-sized companies pick the edition that fits, implement it, and set up a clean, standard core that is easier to upgrade.

Why companies move now

  • ECC maintenance is ending. Mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC ends in 2027, with optional extended maintenance to 2030.
  • Mergers and acquisitions. A cloud ERP is a quick way to bring new entities onto the same processes.
  • Data center costs. Many companies would rather not run SAP infrastructure themselves.

Public cloud edition

SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition is software as a service: shared (multi-tenant) infrastructure, standard SAP best-practice processes and updates delivered automatically.

  • What you get: preconfigured processes for finance, procurement, sales, manufacturing and supply chain, with the SAP Fiori user interface. Integrations with SAP Ariba and SuccessFactors are largely ready to use.
  • Good fit for: companies that can work with standard processes and want a fast rollout and lower running costs.
  • How we implement it: SAP Activate with fit-to-standard workshops, configuration of SAP’s delivered content, and extensions on SAP BTP where something is truly unique, so the core stays clean.

Private cloud edition

SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition, usually bought through RISE with SAP, is a single-tenant system managed for you. You get the full scope of S/4HANA, as on-premise, with SAP or a hyperscaler running the infrastructure.

  • What you get: full S/4HANA functionality, including industry solutions, more freedom to configure and keep custom code, and more control over upgrade timing.
  • Good fit for: companies with complex or heavily customized ECC systems, industry-specific processes, or strict regulatory needs such as GDPR or FDA 21 CFR Part 11.
  • How we implement it: Greenfield or Brownfield. We analyze and fix custom code with the Custom Code Migration app and ABAP Test Cockpit, set up roles and data protection, and use automated testing, which helps a lot in GxP-validated environments.

Choosing between them

A few questions usually settle it:

  • How standard are your processes? Mostly standard points to public; highly specific points to private.
  • How much custom code do you rely on? A lot points to private.
  • What are your compliance needs? Data residency, validation and audit trails often point to private.
  • Control or speed? Private gives more control over upgrades; public gives faster innovation and less IT work.
  • Where are you starting from? New SAP customers can choose either; existing ECC customers often go private with a Brownfield or selective data transition.

We run an assessment to answer these with you before you commit.

What the cloud changes on cost

  • Less infrastructure: no hardware or data center to buy and run. Spending moves from capital to a predictable operating cost.
  • Regular updates: quarterly for public and yearly for private, without large upgrade projects.
  • Security and compliance: SAP’s cloud is certified to common standards, and the private edition can be configured for GDPR and FDA 21 CFR Part 11.
  • Scaling: add capacity as you grow, without buying for peak load.
  • Less IT maintenance: your team spends more time on the business and less on running servers.

Why ITRadiant

Why ITRadiant for SAP Cloud

We work on both editions, so our advice on which one to choose is not tied to either.

  • Edition choice first: we assess your processes, custom code and compliance needs before recommending public or private
  • Fit-to-standard workshops: we use SAP Activate and keep changes to the core to a minimum
  • Regulated industries: experience with GxP validation and FDA 21 CFR Part 11 in the private edition
  • After go-live: hypercare, change management and AMS from the same team
FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the public and private cloud editions?

The public edition is multi-tenant SaaS with standard processes and automatic quarterly updates. The private edition is a single-tenant managed system with the full scope of S/4HANA, more room for custom code and more control over upgrade timing.

What is SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition?

A dedicated SAP S/4HANA system hosted and managed by SAP or a hyperscaler, usually bought through RISE with SAP. You get the functionality of on-premise S/4HANA without running the infrastructure.

How much does an SAP cloud implementation cost?

It depends on the edition, the scope, the number of entities and countries, and how much data and custom code you bring along. We give a firm estimate after a short assessment.

Can we move from SAP ECC to the private cloud edition?

Yes. You can do a Brownfield system conversion, a selective data transition or a Greenfield implementation. We help you choose based on your custom code, data and timeline.

What support is needed after go-live?

Hypercare in the first weeks, then ongoing application support for users, changes and releases. Our AMS team can cover this under agreed SLAs.
